Future Medicine Education and Research Organization, Chiba University / Chiba University Hospital
Distinguished ProfessorAfter graduating from the Nihon University’s School of Dentistry at Matsudo in 1977, and during the time of the doctoral program in medical sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in 1983, I started my significant research career by contributing to the launch of the “Mucosal Immunology” as a scientist at the UAB and the Max Planck Institute for Biology. While pursuing my research career as an immunologist, especially in the advancement of mucosal immunology and vaccinology, I also trained and educated the next-generation physician-scientists, students, and researchers as a professor at UAB, Osaka University and the University of Tokyo, and now University of California San Diego (UCSD) and Chiba University. In addition to my research and academic careers, I also contributed my expertise to leading the Institute of Medical Science as Associate Dean and Dean at the University of Tokyo,
My background as a dentist combined with extensive research experience in the field of Mucosal Immunology makes me exceptionally well qualified to lead and advance the current and future directions of mucosal immunology and mucosal vaccine development. I and my research team has also actively facilitated the development of the next-generation vaccines, the oral and nasal vaccines, which are now in critical pre-clinical and clinical trial stages.
These include efforts in developing practical applications such as “MucoRice,” the rice-based oral vaccine, and the “cationic nanogel” nasal vaccine. Currently, I am dedicated to advancing the practical development of “oral and nasal vaccines” at Chiba University.
