ProfessorI am conducting research on human perceptual-cognitive processes and the characteristics of KANSEI (aesthetics) using experimental psychological methods. In particular, I am investigating the characteristics of the time and space that humans can directly perceive and interact with. My research goal is to understand the mental aspect of time and space to the extent that I can manipulate them as I intended.
Recent Topics of Interests:
The psychological basis of slow motion experiences (tachypsychia phenomenon) that are perceived during accidents such as traffic accidents, collisions, and falls.
The perceived time during the “Zone” or “Flow” experience.
The development of communication methods and strategies for avoiding potential dangers using perceptual illusions and cognitive biases.
The potential of psychology in addressing the measurement problem in observation.

Hobby / Holiday:
I love listening to live music performances, watching RAKUGO (traditional Japanese comedic storytelling), going to the theater, and visiting art galleries to appreciate paintings and media arts.

Assistant ProfessorI specialize in the study of 17th-century Italian paintings, with a primary focus on the works of Artemisia Gentileschi, one of the most famous female painters of those days. My research delves into her activities in Naples, including her professional strategies, client relationships, and influence on other regional artists. Additionally, I have a keen interest in biographies of female artists from the same era and in portraitures, including self-portraits by female painters.

Associate ProfessorI study ancient Greek philosophy (esp. Aristotle’s ethics), contemporary virtue ethics, Japanese philosophy (esp. Japanese virtue ethics), and applied ethics (esp. neuroethics and space ethics). Through these studies, I investigate the notion of virtue and its contemporary significance.
Recent Topics of Interests:
I am recently focusing on the Japanese notion of virtue. Although virtue is an ancient notion embraced by both Eastern and Western philosophies, it takes an interesting form in Japan. Japanese intellectual history has been influenced by Shintoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Christianity. Accordingly, the Japanese notion of virtue includes these values in one way or another. In fact,some Japanese philosophers have struggled to harmonize these values. I think that looking through Japanese notion of virtue can help us develop a new perspective on the notion of virtue.

Assistant ProfessorAs a researcher, I specialize in Russian literature from the 1840s to the 1860s, with a particular interest in the intersection of literature and history, and the rewriting of Russian literary history.
Also, as a translator, I engage with a wide range of Russian literary works dating from the 19th century onwards, extending my scope beyond my primary area of expertise.

Associate ProfessorI am conducting research on the mechanisms and evolutionary processes of cognitive abilities by studying the similarities and differences between human cognitive abilities and those of non-human animals through behavioral experiments. My current focus is primarily on areas such as memory, metacognition, and understanding of physical causal relationships.
